Last night, the late and always will be "King of Pop" Michael Jackson stole the show at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards show, (performing alongside a group of backup dancers to his latest single "Slave to the Rhythm"), inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Jackson is the second fallen legend to thrill in a hologram -- to perform a number from his posthumous album, Xscape.

“We tried to do as best we could what we thought Michael would have loved, and those of us who knew Michael really well, we had a good perspective on it,” L.A. Reid, CEO of the record label that released the King of Pop’s last album, told the Associated Press.

According to the LA Times, the closely guarded secret had been spoiled days before the ceremony. On Friday a federal judge tossed out a lawsuit from tech companies alleging the hologram would violate their patents — but the performance remained the night's most anticipated moment. And just like Tupac Shakur, Jackson was brought to life by the wonders of technology.

Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry, who won top female artist, also made remote performances, while Robin Thicke, who collected four awards. Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert also performed onstage.

Though he was a no show, Justin Timberlake was the night's biggest winner, nabbing seven trophies including top artist and top male artist. "It's not a competition. But if it was, I won," he said in a taped speech.
