Queen Latifah Deputized by the City of Los Angeles: Latifah Set to Marry 34 Couples During Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' Grammy Awards Performance

Actress and talk show host Queen Latifah was recently deputized by the city of Los Angeles and is reportedly set to marry 34 couples during the 56th Annual Grammy Awards show in Los Angeles on Sunday (Jan 26th).

First reported by the New York Times, the producers behind the program, which is to be broadcast live at 8 p.m. on CBS, are hoping that the biggest show-stopper of the night will be a much more solemn event.

The site reports that Queen Latifah will officiate an on-air wedding of 34 couples — gay, straight, old, young, of many races and many colors during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ performance of their Grammy-nominated song “Same Love."

Among the group tying the knot include Lewis' sister Laura and her boyfriend Alex.
"A night that is already tremendous for me, for the music," Lewis explained, "but to have my sister get married and my family there watching it—that makes it a whole other level of amazing."
The hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who are nominated for seven Grammys, “Same Love” track quickly became a marriage-equality anthem last year just as that issue was drawing intense national attention.

Grammy organizers however insist that this ceremony is not a publicity stunt, telling the NY Times; "We're serious about this," said longtime producer of the Grammy's Ken Ehrlich.

"We don't need to stoop to the level of trying to find gimmicks and sensationalistic approaches to what we do," added Neil Portnow, the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
