Award-winning actress and activist Ruby Dee, whose seven-decade career included triumphs on stage and screen, passed away last night at age 91.
According to Dee's representative Michael Livingston (via CNN), the iconic actress died peacefully Wednesday at her home in New Rochelle, New York.
The "American Gangster" star -- often with her late husband, Ossie Davis -- was a formidable force in both the performing arts community and civil rights movement in the early to late '90s.

The couple were master and mistress of ceremonies at the 1963 March on Washingon, and [Dee] was friends with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. She received the Frederick Douglass Award in 1970 from the New York Urban League.
Dee's film credits also includes "The Jackie Robinson Story" (1950), "A Raisin in the Sun" (1961), "Buck and the Preacher" (1972), and "Do the Right Thing" (1989). She also earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in "Gangster" (2007) and won an Emmy and a Grammy for other work.
